So many events nationally, internationally. Some have made people happy, but majority have resulted in gloom. I am trying to recall some of them which I followed regularly, not necessarily in the chronological order, loosely in the order of their consequences. Since I follow Politics more than anything else, they are going to dominate the list.

First the BIG one, which is hitting the entire world's population in one or the other way. Sky rocketing Crude Oil prices, which is leading to high food prices. The support the ethanol production is getting in Americas and the EU is resulting in less food grains being supplied to the developing world. Countries which do not grow their staple food are hit hard. Egypt, world's largest importer of wheat has seen violent clashes and has increased the salaries by 33% to support people to buy the wheat. Protests have also taken place in Pakistan, Afghanistan. The supply of rice to Middle East is almost cut off.

Ever increasing demand of energy has made developing economies like China, India also compete with US, EU for the Crude Oil in Middle East, spiraling Crude Oil Prices. India and China, at last, increased Petroleum products prices few weeks back. I do not know how far can they go shielding the half the world's population from a World Phenomenon. Its high time they educate everybody that both of them DO NOT have enough OIL with in their boundaries and they depend on overseas.

I hope at least this event makes people aware that Oil is not a permanent source of Energy and educate them to save every 'joule' of energy. Only Solar, Wind or Oceans can be answer for the world's hungry for energy.

Second one too is a BIG one, which is important to the entire world. Barack Obama won the US Democratic Party Candidature for the US Presidential elections, after a long, close battle with Hillary Rodham Clinton. In the beginning, analysts believed Hillary will sweep the US Democratic Primaries against Obama. But Obama with his motto of "Change" steadily built his path to victory. He will be fighting with John McCain, who is the US Republican Party Presidential Candidate. This will be great fight to watch out for.

Benazir Bhutto was assassinated in Rawalpindi during an Election Rally. I have read that she has never been good for India. But I think she was of some hope for US to fight the Al-quaeda.

Russian Parliamentary and Presidential Elections. The One-party dominated (Remember Congress in Nehru's time) democracy in Russia sweeps both the polls. Vladimir Putin is continuing his strong influence in Russia as Prime Minister. He has selected Medevedev as the next President. Italy gets its 63rd Government since World War II. Argentina gets their first Woman President - Cristina Fernandez.

Now this is a recent one. National Drama over Energy. The Nuclear Deal with US. Congress vs. CPI(M). The demand for Electricity in India is so high that, for the time being, I believe Nuclear Energy is the only answer, since all renewable sources still need more research and high investment and not capable of producing the Electricity needed. As the 2009 Union Elections are approaching, CPI(M) definitely cannot be with Congress till the Elections, as they cannot fight with their ally - Congress on their 3 strongholds - West Bengal, Kerala and Tripura. On top of this their "Anti-US" agenda is inspiring them to threaten to pull out support for Congress led UPA government at the Centre.

Now something to cheer! Karnataka gets a near-One-Party Government. After the debacle and the unholy tie ups of the opponents after the 2004 State Assembly elections, people have been eager to see one party Government. With BJP installing the first Goverment down south, BJP is now hoping to win the next Union Elections too. There is little possibility a single party Government will be installed at the Centre in near future.

Supreme Court clears path for Arjun Singh to implement the OBC reservations in admissions to IITs, IIMs. Now his yesterday's order says the quota will also be implemented for the Teaching Faculty as well. I see the caste based reservations in Buses and trains coming in the near future.

Now the showdown of Vote Bank! Gujjars went on rampage demanding the State/Central Government (The case went on a merry go round between the State and Centre, finally landing With Raje). The public bear the brunt of no trains between Mumbai and Delhi. The Gujjar leader Mr. Bhainsla walks free and sets an example of how to arm twist the Governments when the next elections are near, and get the work done. Is Democracy just securing the Vote-Banks?

Sudden burst of protests in Tibet. And the whole Anti-China world woke up and called for dialogue between Dalai Lama and China. The protests went so far that many countries threaten to pull out of the Olympic Games, which the Chinese Government is using to show China's Prominence in today's world. China faced a mammoth Earthquake in Siachun province with the death toll raising to more than 100,000. The sorrow, the quick response of the Chinese Government, and the media freedom allowed to cover the event suppresses the Tibetan protests. A new conspiracy theory is floating around in the internet, which are linked to the 5 Olympic Mascots. There have been 5 disasters in the recent past in China which some people have linked with those Mascots. Chinese are strong believers in Superstitions. The Olympics are starting on 08-08-08 at 08:08:08 PM, yes, no prizes for guessing, 8 is the lucky number, so believe the Chinese.

Another Disaster. Cyclone in Burma. The effect of that gets multiplied thanks to the Military Government in Burma. The Government even held a referendum for its new constitution amidst the disaster! The exact death toll is still unknown. Many International Media reporters are directly sent back from Rangoon Airport. China. Floods in Tobasco, Mexico, US Mid-west have been severe this time.

Elections in 2 key African Countries go haywire. Nobody is ready to give up the post. Nobody is trying to accept the defeat. Kenya saw a long period of protests, battles. At last some sort of Compromise has been made. Robert Mugabe does not seem to give up power till he dies. Even though he lost in the First round of elections, through his Presidential influence, he made sure that he wins the second round. Zimbabwe inflation at 6 figures!

Now the Indian Media. Sensational at its best! Price rise - Go on listing the effects of it in the first page. A short article for the reason of Price-rise in the Business Page, which 99% will not read! Who will educate the people about the World wide phenomenon? Amitabh, Rajinikanth, Shahrukh, Reality Shows, Smriti's comeback to Kyunki have come over to the front page in News papers and become Breaking News in News(?) channels. Reality show SMS business model must be growing in leaps and bounds looking at the number of Reality shows in each GEC on all Saturdays and Sundays.

IPL took over the Front + Sports pages of almost all newspapers for almost 2 months. People replaced their serials with Cricket Matches. I guess by next year by April, there will be 2 TV sets in around 10% of households in India, one for IPL and another for non-IPL. Thank God! At least some people do not waste time on the day long Cricket Matches from now on.

When I am writing this blog, Spain have won the Euro - 2008. I do not know Football much. I had read that Spain have played really well in all their matches. Spain have won in the final too. A win to cheer! No Italy, No Portugal, No controversies.

Many events are continuing as before.

Global Warming increasing. Arctic Ice Caps now getting lesser. Russia plants their flag to establish sovereignty over the North Pole.

Terrorism attacks/threats as before.

The call for "Talks" and Dialogues" (I have heard enough of these words. I guess they will loose their meaning in a few years from now, like many few words mean now the opposite of what they meant before) for the ever continuing Middle East Crisis. Gazans broke the Border wall with Egypt because of the blockade by Israel.

Iran-Nuclear crisis is still continuing. Some doubts were raised also on Syria on the basis of some satellite photographs.

TOI is still printing 1/2 page news daily and they have extended the same to 3 more cities - Chennai, Goa and Jaipur. I feel sorry for them. TOI Bangalore fills 2 page news about Bangalore's new International Airport for 15 days.

I hope the days ahead brings more happiness to world.

The Ashden Awards are also called the Green Oscars. Read More

This year, projects BIOTECH from Kerala, SKG Sangha from Karnataka have won the awards under Biogas category. This year's 'Outstanding award', awarded to a past winner whose work has accelerated since winning an award has been given to Bangalore based Selco.

SKG Sangha has radically improved the lives of thousands of rural families in Karnataka, by supplying them with both dung based biogas plants for cooking and a specially designed unit that turns the slurry from the biogas plant into high quality fertiliser. It provides a cheap, reliable source of energy, reduces indoor air pollution and eases pressure on forest resources. The units supplied by SKG Sangha produce fertiliser simply by combining the slurry with straw and leaves and then adding worms which re-digest the mixture to produce vermicompost. SKG Sangha has installed over 43,000 biogas plants in the state of Karnataka alone.

The SKG Sangha's plant can be easily installed in rual areas where dung is readily available. We do have this plant installed at our native village. The plant needs no major maintainence. The gas produces highly bluish flame making it better than the LPG!

BIOTECH has succeeded in tackling the problem of the dumping of food waste in the streets of Kerala through the installation of biogas plants that use the food waste to produce gas for cooking and, in some cases, electricity for lighting; the residue serves as a fertiliser. To date BIOTECH has built and installed an impressive 12,000 domestic plants (160 of which also use human waste from latrines to avoid contamination of ground water), 220 institutional plants and 17 municipal plants that use waste from markets to power generators.

The BIOTECH Project is really boom for the urban areas. It can be easily installed in every house hold in cities as having a underground small plant is feasible. This also results in proper disposal of organic wastes, also reduces the pressure on under ground drainage.

Selco, based in Bangalore, provides its solar photovoltaic, electricity generating technology to families through microfinance, which means underwriting the cost for poor families. The price of a Selco solar home system is between US$275 and US$325 and it uses solar power to charge batteries during the day so lights and other appliances can run off them during dark hours.

With long power cuts in rural areas, Selco's solar systems have become a saviour of the rural people, also easing the pressure to build more power plants.

Rural India is making great progress in the field of sustainable energy by harnessing Solar energy and the bio-wastes. Thanks to Government's encouragement and sky rocketing electricity bills, people in urban India are going for solar water heaters. Much research needs to be done in the field of harnessing energy from the huge amount of wastes produced by the cities. Making Rain water harvesting and a small bio-gas plant mandatory in every house hold in cities makes a good start.

Almost every so called 'Talent Hunt' programme boils down to participants pleading to the audience to vote for them to make them win!

Talent should always be judged by a team of experts in the respective field. Experts can appropriately recongnise the ability of the participant.

At present, all these 'Talent Hunt' programmes have become a 'joke'. They neither stress on the talent of the participant, nor they allow him/her to be judged by a panel of judges. Though experts are present, they are just to 'praise' or 'criticise very little' the participant. These programmes involve make overs for the participants with designer clothes and colored hair, with those brands promptly being displayed in the background! The 'talent' takes a back seat.

After every performance, the participant regardless of whether he/she performed good or bad, pleads to the audience to vote for him/her to save from elimination. Everybody in the audience is not able to judge the talent of the participant. They can neither catch the participant's mistakes nor judge their capability. Most of them go by their looks. Now comes the regionalism which plays a 'monster' role. People vote for the participant who hails from their region regardless of whether he/she was good or bad. </space>People in Assam and Meghalaya are holding rallies to ask people over there to vote for the participant from their region. <space>Adding to this even the participants ask for votes in their mother tongue to get votes from 'their' people. Disgusting!

The winners of last seasons of these 'Talent shows' are no where today. They are no where to be seen. Why? because they were not the best talents! Where is Abhijeet Sawant? where is Sandeep Acharya? Where is Sanjaya Malakar? They were stars made by the TV rather than the audience. They will be stars till that season of the programme ends.

On the other side, the programmes where the winners were judged by a panel of judges have produced the best talents. 'Meri Awaaz Suno' gave highly talented Sunidhi Chauhan to the music industry. 'TVS SaReGaMa' brought Sonu Nigam, Shreya Ghoshal, Archana Udupa to the lime light. Even the present 'Ede Tumbi Haduvenu' on ETV Kannada is bringing the best child talents to the people with children being judged by experts in the music field. All those programmes have/had made people wait anxiously every week for them to enjoy the performances by the best talents.

Almost every talent hunt show is just behind the money and not the talent. Talent show is being made into 'Audience Voting' show by the big money, the cellular operators are offering to the programme. These programmes are clocking more TRPs because people want to see 'their' candidate winning. Is there end to these 'Audience Voting' Talent hunts?

And now, this 'Talent Hunt' has spilled over to 'Wonders of the World'! New7Wonders is asking people of the globe to select the 'Next 7 Wonders of the World' among many Ancient Monuments of the world. People of a country are voting en masse to the monument of their country. Indians are including Taj Mahal in the 7 wonders they are choosing, Greeks are including for Acropolis of Athens, Brazilians Christ the Redeemer in Rio, Chinese The Great Wall of China.

First of all making a select few as 'Wonders of the world' itself is not justice. Every monument is wonder on its own. Pyramids cannot be compared to Taj Mahal. Great Wall of China cannot be compared with Macha Pichu of Peru. Upon this, electing them through voting in global level just makes people high on regionalism rather than making them select the truly great ones. I am sure almost all of them wouldnt have seen every participant in the monument list. If Acropolis fails to get into among the seven finally, nobody can say its not a wonder!

Already beauty contests like Miss World have become prey to this 'Audience Voting'. I just hope the day will never come when the winners of the Gymnastics or Diving or Fencing in Olympics are not selected by the global audience vote!</space>Vinayhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06056727608733646410noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-18945075.post-36713770223724240482007-06-21T22:45:00.000+05:302007-06-22T08:55:42.191+05:30ಟಪ್..

Unarguably the most simple, pleasing and hence the most beautiful of all fonts that have been created till today. Helvetica was created by a Swiss, Miedinger in 1957. So 2007 is the Golden Jubilee Year for the world's heavily used font 'HELVETICA'. It was named after the Latin name for Switzerland 'Helvetia'.

Helvetica alphabets are very clean, clear, uniform and no-shrill. Helvetica symbolizes seriousness, assurance, simple and natural. Helvetica is heavily used by all major companies of the world dealing with Money, Airlines in their display boards and logos as they want to convey the same message for which Helvetica stands for. Each style creates an impression in the reader's mind. Some fonts symbolize seriousness. Some have comic sense. Some display leisure. Some display antiqueness. Some symbolize speed. Some display even horror as well.

I am amazed by the power of fonts. The character of a person can be determined by analyzing his handwriting, conversely the alphabet style gives a character to the word it is part of.

So creation of fonts is some sort of reverse engineering, isn't it?

Read More @ Mungaru Male

Vinayhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06056727608733646410noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-18945075.post-69893444637754850222007-05-08T00:12:00.000+05:302007-05-08T01:07:34.411+05:30Bus-PassIts the same time of the year again when college students line up for the renewal of their bus-pass.

Bus-pass!! Its the most important after air, water, food for any college student who uses public transport. Getting a bus pass was a tough task. Standing in long long queues, getting the signature of the college Principal and of course ensuring that the bus pass route covers majestic bus stand as the change point so that we can freely commute to and from Majestic Bus Stand :).

Bus-Pass was issued in two phases. First one was for ten months from July to April. Issuing bus-pass in first phase was fairly organized by the BMTC. Getting Principal's signature on the Application form was another uphill task as Principal wasnt available most of the time. Sometimes it used to take few days :( Bus-pass was issued on submitting this Application form along with the pass fee. It would be the happiest day as if we have been awarded and looking at the new bus-pass multiple times.

Now the second phase, really tough one. All College students badly needed to renew their pass as they used to have classes unlike the school children during April-May. Several thousand students used to descend to the Majestic BMTC bus stand on May 1st. Getting the bus-pass renewed for the second phase did not require a fresh application form again, but getting the pass among the thousands was challenging !!

But having the bus-pass was equal to having an extra power to commute in the public transport. It was a proud feeling saying 'pass' to the conductor of the bus. I remember running to the bus stops and even changing the buses at many bus stops to catch my favourite buses 43C, 43D which used to take us near the college. I cannot forget leaving a part to study on the way to bus stop and in the bus during exams!! Some of regular co-commuters of the bus became close friends.

I go down the memories of the city bus travel to college the moment I see a 43C or 43D. I always wonder how buses, trains and even our own vehicles hold a lot of memories of our life.

I am missing the city bus travel to college badly !!!Vinayhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06056727608733646410noreply@blogger.com45tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-18945075.post-23252791803335508902007-05-07T20:37:00.000+05:302007-05-08T07:41:50.400+05:30Faces of DemocracyDemocracy !!! The buzz word in today's world politics. Some countries have very successful democracy. Some others are struggling with it. Some others are facing army coups. Some others are starting to introduce it. Some events that took place around the globe in past few months show different faces of democracy.

There were elections in Nigeria, which most of the observers called to be scrapped. The Elections were not conducted in free and fair manner. In some places the elections were delayed by a day as the ballot boxes did not reach even on the election day !!! Expectedly the ruling party managed to win again. Zimbabwe is struggling with Robert Mugabe, who is ruling the country since its independence. Protests by the opposition were banned. Thailand had its another army coup to overthrow its Prime Mintister. Bangladesh's army government planned to remove its two most powerful women from its political scene, which was revoked later.

Another election attracting the World Media is Turkey's Presidential Elections. People came out in millions in Istnabul and Ankara to oppose the Presidential Candidate Mr. Gul who many think has a hidden Islamic Agenda which many turn Turkey into another Islamic nation affecting Turkey's image around the world. People wanted their country to be secular. As of now, Mr. Gul's election has failed in the first and second round and hence withdrawn from the race.

The 2007 French Presidential Election has been the focus of World Media. I was simply bowled over seeing the percentage of polling that is around 85%. I was again shocked to see the polling percentage of 85.5% in the second round of the Presidential Elections, where Nicolas Sarkozy and Segolene Royal fought it out on issues of Employment, Economy. Finally Sarkozy has won the Elections by getting 53% of the votes. I am not able to stop congratulating the French people for the display of Democracy. French people have shown the world that they really care about their country and its future by coming out in huge numbers to vote.

In our country, the 7 phase elections of the Uttar Pradesh State Assembly have been going on for around a month now. The polling percentage has been around just 50%. With multiple parties in the election arena, exit polls have indicated that no single party is going to win a majority resulting in Hung Assembly. Hung Houses seems to have become a norm in our country. Parties forming all sorts of alliances to form governments which are always marred by uncertainty due to fights between them.

Most of the 'Educated' people in our country always blame the politicians for all the problems our country is facing today. But is that fully fair? Arent the politicians elected by the people. Most of the 'Educated' people do not even go and vote in the elections. Many dont even care to include themselves in the voter's list.

Is each one of us doing our duty before we point somebody else? Why doesnt the polling percentage never touch the levels of the French Elections? Are we too lazy to stand in a queue to vote? Arent we patriotic enough about our country? People make a huge hue and cry over Narayana Murthy's National Anthem issue or Madira bedi wearing saree having Indian Flag on it. People have really forgotten the real issues. With large population under poverty in our country, even politicians have forgotten real issues. With Election manifestos containing giving free TVs instead of addressing real issues like Employment, Corruption, Democracy in India has lost its way. People participation is missing in our Democracy as we seem to be following the 'dont care' attitude towards the country. Determination is missing in people when it comes to anything related to the country.

Shouldn't the clearing of this mess start by the people themselves by voting compulsarily in the elections? Elections are the only way people can participate in Democracy.

Even though we call ourselves 'World's largest Democracy', we have a fair election system, our Democracy is much better than Bangladesh's, Nigeria's or Thailand's, Democracy has to go still a long long way (many decades?) to achieve success in our country.

They have destroyed the forests, polluted the water, air, contaminated the soil, mined the mineral wealth of Earth..... They are doing irreversible damage to earth. Every one has become so selfish that they dont even care for the Earth which supports their life. Every one is after the material wealth, building big houses, converting forest land to farm lands, saving money by dumping the garbage to rivers directly.

The exploitation of earth has been going since humans came on earth. It has reached an alarming level today. From many days I getting thoughts on - if humans did not exist on earth, then....

The whole world would have been 'Picture Post Card' like. The pictures of Nature with Mountains, Rivers, Greenery all over.. Just imagine, the whole world would have been untouched if humans did not exist. The mountains would have been still ice capped. There would have been 'Song of Nature' playing every where.

Numerous species of the Animal and Plant Kingdom would have been still present. Because of the greediness to acquire more wealth, trees have been cut for their wood, elephants have been killed for their ivory, tigers, deers, leopards have been killed for their skin. Millions of sharks wouldnt have tried to swim without their fins after they have been chopped off by the Chinese and Japanese. Many bird species wouldnt have been lost forever.

The Ganges would have been as pure and sacred as described in the Vedas. Ganges has been identified to contains medicinal properties, but no more... Every garbage, drinage water from the Cities of Kanpur, Allahabad, Varanasi joins Ganges. There would not have been human dead bodies, which are thrown into the Ganges. Apart from these the Ganges wouldn't have been carrying huge amount of flowers which the devotees throw. Every river on earth would (specially Indian Rivers) have been as pure as Ganges.

The 'Dead sea' would have been still alive in future. The 'Dead sea' in the border of Israel and Jordan is fed by the river Jordan and without any outlet, making it saltier and saltier. With Israel and Jordan blocking every drop of the river, it is not far when 'Dead sea' will permanently die.

Most of the forests of Karst Plateau of Slovenia would have been still there, if they wouldnt have been chopped down long ago to provide the wooden pylons on which the city of Venice now stands. There wouldnt have been Chernobyl disaster, four square kilometres of pine forest in the immediate vicinity of the reactor wouldnt have gone ginger brown and died.

Africa's biggest lakes, Lake Victoria, Lake Tanganayika wouldn't have been shrinking because of enroachment by humans to convert their banks into farmlands. In order to encash the demand for the ornamental flowers in Europe and around the world, people in Kenya have encroached the banks of these lakes to ensure permanent supply of water. The surface area of these lakes are decreasing at an alarming rate.

Antartica wouldn't have to bear the brunt of the harmful UV Rays entering its atmosphere because of the holes created in Ozone layer by the emission of green house gases from some where else on earth. Arctic many icebergs would have been still retained from melting due to increase of temperature on earth.

The rivers would have been flowing as they were flowing thousands of years ago without any blockage in between. Millions of dams around the earth have defaced the flow the of rivers resulting in drowing of thick forests into their back waters, Earth quakes and leaving the places downstream high and dry.

Many places on earth would have been still natural without the massive holes created by Humans to mine the mineral wealth and later abandoning them with the not-so fertile soil covering the fertile ones causing hindrance for the growth of vegetation, resulting in deserts. The rocks of the Earth wouldn't have been defaced to supply the demand for stones in building huge Dams, houses. Large cities of Earth Sao Paulo, New York, Tokyo, Bombay, London wouldn't have created 'Scars' on Earth's surface. With humans encroaching on the sea surface by dumping the soil got by clearing an entire hill to build airports, high rise buildings, the sea shores at many places have been defaced.

The ground water table wouldn't have gone down, if every household boring a well to extract the ground water without any attempt to refill it. The ground water could have been still retained partially if at least the lakes wouldnt have been filled up.

..... ....

.... ...

The list is endless. The damage is irreversible.......Vinayhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06056727608733646410noreply@blogger.com3tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-18945075.post-32949606843291573842007-01-24T22:28:00.000+05:302007-02-04T16:55:09.419+05:30Another Holocaust ?January 27th is observed internationally as International Holocaust Remembrance Day. It is observed to pay tribute to the victims of genocide of minority groups in Europe during the World War II. Holocaust destroyed millions of people, especially the Jews from Europe, particularly Germany, Poland and Austria which were ruled by Hitler.

But what caused Holocaust to happen? How could the massacre at such a large scale could occur? Were the people unknown of their disappearing Jewish neighbours? I tried to find an answer.

Jews around the world are regarded as Intelligent race. They have contributed immensely to Literature, Music, Sports, Mathematics, Science, Politics, Arts. Jews have around 1000 years of history in Europe. Jews were present in the Social Hierarchy in Europe probably dominating in most of the fields.

When outsiders or people who have migrated to a place start dominating it, the locals start feeling insecure in their own place which leads to the hatred towards outsiders in the minds of the local people. This always happens in every human mind because of jealousy and fear leading to hatred. People start differentiating between a local and an outsider. Their treatment to a local person and the outsider also differs. People will never accept them as one among themselves.

People of Europe started feeling the same when Jews started to displace the local people in the social hierarchy. Some articles even write that the average European used to suffer under the Jews. People could never accept the Jews dominating them. Martin Luther, the German leader of the Protestant Reformation had called for harsh persecution of the Jewish people in the 15th century.

In the 20th century, Hitler built the Nazi Party and rose to power by becoming the Chancellor of Germany. Among many things, he wanted to establish Aryan race, as he thought Aryans were the early inhabitants of Europe and they were the superior race, which was even the theme of the opening ceremony of 1936 Berlin Olympics. Hitler began to claim the Jews were natural enemies of the Aryan Race. The anti-semetism led to systematic removal of Jews from the European Society. The hatred in the people's minds gathered large support or rather no opposition to Holocaust. Europe lost almost all Jews.

Thats history.

Coming to present times.

Bombay has been experiencing rapid economic development post-independence attracting large immigrants from every nook and corner of the country. Marathis in Bombay felt threatened due to large scale of immigration leading to the birth of Shivsena as the protector of Maratha Pride led by Balasaheb Thakre, who is also an ardent admirer of Hitler. Shivsena had even attacked immigrants in the past. Bangalore's economic boom is attracting people from all over India. The Information Technology boom has created thousands of jobs. The land prices have sky rocketted. The cost of living has increased multiple times. The local people of Bangalore feel they are suffering because of the immirants. They feel that the outsiders have started dominating them.

Moving to Assam, ULFA has projected itself as the saviour of Assamese people. Some days back in the state of Assam, Several workers who were the immigrants from the the state of Bihar were massacred by ULFA. Isn't this a Holocaust in a small scale ?

Few days before, there was a huge controversy surrounding 'Big Brother' in UK. One of the participant Jade Goody made racist remarks on Indian film actor Shipa Shetty. Shilpa has more name and fame than Jade. The jealousy, fear of eviction and the dominance of Shilpa led to hatred which resulted in racist remarks at Shilpa Shetty. If Shilpa had been a British, I am sure Jade wouldnt have made those remarks. The whole world cried that Britain is still a racist society.

Thats present.

I am sure every individual, every society in this world is racist. People do (or rather can) not accept a person from a different race or an outsider rise above them and dominate them. In India where there are people belonging to different groups, languages, ethnicities.. racism is very much evident in everyday life. People want 'their' people to be in their group. They support 'their' people.

Finally who is to blame for 'holocaust' ? People give 'racism' as the reason for Holocaust. Then who is to blame for 'racism' ? Should the 'outsiders' be blamed ? It will be illogical to blame immigration, as people immigrate in search of better quality of life. Then, should the people who practice 'racism' be blamed ? 'Human Nature' is the one to be blamed. The real reason for racism is the jealousy, fear and hatred which are present in every human's mind. People only vary in the level of acceptance towards other people.

What's future ?

The hatred and fear is increasing among people, no matter people often say 'We are all one'. With the wars happening around the world where one country wants to destroy or dominate another, people from one faith spreading hatred towards others, another holocaust may be in the offing.Vinayhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06056727608733646410noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-18945075.post-52845335683696341692007-01-23T23:09:00.000+05:302007-02-04T12:39:14.837+05:30Water in OscarFinally today the nominations for various categories for Oscars are announced.

Indian-born Canadian Deepa Mehta's 'Water' has been selected among the final five in Best Foreign Language Film Category.

'Water' is last of the trilogy by Deepa Mehta. The others being 'Fire' and 'Earth'. Deepa's movies have always been controversial since they deal with controversial subjects which are generally opposed. 'Water' also went through this controversy, when the shooting started at Varanasi. The sets of the film were burnt and vandalised, forcing Deepa to postpone the shooting of the film indefinitely. Later with a different cast of John Abraham, Lisa Ray she shot the film in Srilanka under the title 'River Moon'.

Some people are up against Deepa's movies. People say that her movies show India in bad taste. But can we forget our past ? Can we say that movies should only show good times ?

I felt very happy since Water has entered the Oscars as a Canadian entry and has made it to the final five, till I opened the Wikipedia page to read more about 'Water' and got disturbed when I read these two snippets -

Prior to shooting of the film in Sri Lanka, Deepa Mehta decreed that only copies of the script excluding the rape scene of the young widow were to be circulated among the crew. It was feared that either child actor's parents or local authorities would attempt to hinder the scene being shot. A plan was hatched to have child's mother, who was always present with her during shooting, distracted and led away from the set while the key scene was being shot. Senior crew members who were aware of this plan found it highly objectionable and unethical, and expressed their very strong disapproval to producers. Despite the mutiny, Mehta insisted that child artist's mother, an 'uneducated' Sinhalese housewife from small-town Sri Lanka, was not sophisticated enough to understand the true meaning of the scene, and their plan went ahead, causing a considerable amount of disaffection among the crew for several days thereafter. Many in particular felt this action was antithetical to Water's purported pro-women's rights ethos, as well as exploitative in application of a double standard by 'Westerners' shooting in a less-developed country. Crew members were warned not to discuss the incident with the press.

If whatever Wikipedia says is true, then it was totally unethical on part of Deepa to carry out such an act. Deepa could have taken some time to convince child actor's mother. When the mother watches the film, she will be in rude shock. Deepa should have played her responsibly.

The frozen corpse of a real parrot was used in the scene where the young widow a pet parrot in the film. The Sri Lankan animal wranglers and props crew were not able to create a convincing mock-up of a dead parrot, so they finally killed a couple of parrots and brought the frozen corpses to the set in a cooler for use in the scene. A number of key crew members had expressed strong objections to killing a parrot (or parrots) for the scene, so the animal wranglers claimed that they "found" the dead parrots and subsequently frozen them.

Killing an animal for the sake of a film ? The parrot could have been given made unconscious for the scene rather than killing.... How can Deepa Mehta, a highly respected movie maker can go to such extents to make a film !!!

Are directors like Deepa only for the sake of winning awards ?Vinayhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06056727608733646410noreply@blogger.com4tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-18945075.post-29808048820654818412007-01-10T22:33:00.000+05:302007-01-11T10:17:16.357+05:30Apple calling !!Well, I cannot resist myself from blogging about today's BIGGEST breaking news, the iPhone !!!!

I have spent almost entire day today reading about iPhone. What an Amazing and an Unbelievable Phone !! What an invention !! I was blown away with the pictures of iPhone. iPhone plays music, it has email features, it has got browser, it has got email clients, it has got Maps plus the features of a normal phone. iPhone has not got any new features that any smart phone does not provide, isn't it?. Let us see what makes iPhone so special.

iPhone = Video iPod + OS X 10 + Smart Mobile Phone - Keypad.

Yes! Apple has removed the Keypad leaving only the "Home" key, making the iPhone entirely touch sensitive. Keypads have limited the screen of phones and all the keys are not necessary always. iPhone has got context based button, which will appear when they are required. For example the number pad when you want to make a call, accept or ignore buttons when you receive a call, play or pause button when you are playing music, a QWERTY keyboard when you want to write an email... makes lot of sense right ??

Apple has filed 200+ patents with respect to iPhone which indicates how much research and invention has gone into making the iPhone. Some of the simple, yet very useful and necessary innovations made by Apple in iPhone are

Since iPhone is touch sensitive, locking can be iPhone can be difficult given that only one "Home" button is present on the iPhone. To unlock the iPhone, the user has to slide a bar on the iPhone which is unlikely to happen when kept in Pocket.

iPhone has got lots of sensors embedded in it. One of them is the object sensor. When you pick up a call and keep the phone close to the ear, object sensor intimates iPhone to automatically switch off the display to save power

When seeing a picture or browsing a webpage, and you want to see them in a wide screen, just turn you iPhone to a wide screen view, the display of iPhone autimatically changes to a wide screen, thanks to motion sensor.

On screen QWERTY Keyboard is also innovative. When the user hits a key on the keyboard, the key enlarges and the alphabet comes above the key, so that the user can see the alphabet pressed and ensure, that he is hitting the appropriate key.

But one basic question remians... Many technology companies invent and build products constantly like Apple. The features of Apple products are also not unique. Then whats so special about Apple which makes people going crazy about them ?

Its the most basic thing about any product, they are Simplicity and Usability !! Apple products are known for their simple and uncluttered designs, high usability without much learning. These two very basic things along with innovation make Apple products unique among other similar products.

Take iPod. iPod is known for its sleek design, its usability with a simple wheel with great quality music. The Macs are the benchmarks for other PCs/Laptops and the very "cool" OS X, which is the most advanced Operating system with the adjective "easy" for every application in it. Macs and OS X together make an Amazing combination of sleek and stylish hardware with great set of essential softwares.

Some people argue that, Apple just does huge marketing of its not so superior products. I agree that Apple markets its products in a big way. But only marketing with not-so-good products will not achieve the followers which Apple has today. The success of Apple products is a product of Superior quality products and good marketing.

Apple built the Macintosh, then invented the Mouse, iPods, built OS X, Macs, iTunes, Apple TV and has displayed its "brilliant" iPhone yesterday. I had never read about Jews or Judaism, which has a long history from Jesus Christ to Holocaust. I read through the wikipedia pages for Christianity, Islam, Zorastrianism. I always had a question - how Hinduism has got so many Gods ?
Have you also ever wondered, how Hinduism has got so many Gods ? where as Islam, Judaism or Christianity have got only one God !!

In Discovery of India, Nehru says about the Vedas -
"The Vedas were simply meant to be a collection of existing knowledge of the day; they are a jumble of many thing: hymns, prayers, ritual for sacrifice, magic, magnificient nature poetry. There is no idolatry in them; no temples for Gods."
Specifically about the Rig Veda, he says -
"The Rig Veda, the first of the Vedas, is probably the earliest book that human possesses. In it we can find outpourings of the human mind, the glow of poetry, the rupture at nature's loveliness and mystery".

This made me think then who created those numerous Gods ?
Gods have evolved with the human civilization. Every Epic has added Gods. The forces of Nature have been personified and the Gods have born. Every force of Nature Fire, Wind, Rain are depicted as Gods. Later, the principles of life have also been personified to make a model human being, and epics have been written around them, so that people follow them and worship them as God. Depicting the Nature as Human Gods is also there in Old Greek Religion.

Islam, Judaism, Christianity have only one God, with the principles of life documented in Quran, Torah and the Bible respectively, without creating a model human being with all those principles. Bhagavadgeetha also preaches the principles of life. Advaita also says about the oneness of God - Brahman, the supreme reality.

All the religions of the world worship God in their own way. Then are the Gods of each religion different ? Aren't we all worshipping the same forces of Nature and the principles of life directly or indirectly? or have we forgot that we are worshipping the Nature and the principles of life?

Why are people fighting for their Gods, when their Gods are one and the same !!

What is your opinion on this ?Vinayhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06056727608733646410noreply@blogger.com3tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-18945075.post-58250587084103201822007-01-08T23:41:00.000+05:302007-01-09T12:48:32.964+05:30ಕನ್ನಡ ರತ್ನಕೋಶನಾನು ಪ್ರೌಢಶಾಲೆಯಲ್ಲಿದ್ದಾಗ ಪತ್ರಿಕೋದ್ಯಮ ಸಂಘದ ಸದಸ್ಯನಾಗಿದ್ದೆ.

ಕನ್ನಡ ರತ್ನಕೋಶ ಪ್ರತಿಯೊಬ್ಬ ಕನ್ನಡಿಗನೂ ಸದಾ ತನ್ನ ಜತೆ ಇಟ್ಟುಕೊಳ್ಳಬೇಕಾದ ಒಂದು ಕೈಪಿಡಿ.Vinayhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06056727608733646410noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-18945075.post-7902893145292744862007-01-08T14:08:00.000+05:302007-01-08T15:29:13.022+05:30Mathemagic ??I have posted my writings on many topics - TV, Newpapers, Culture, Nature. This time it is MATHEMATICS !!

Here are some interesting sayings about Folding paper in half.

The fact : It is impossible to fold any piece of paper no matter how big, small, thin or thick more than 8 times

You can't fold a paper more than five or six times. Dont believe? Try it. Thinner paper? Longer paper? It doesn't matter; you just can't do it.

All the above statements have been proved to be false in January 2002 by a high school student of Pomona, California by name - Britney Gallivan. She has been successful in folding the paper for 12 times !!!

All started when her Maths teacher told that She would get an extra maths credit, if she took up the option of solving the problem of folding a sheet in half 12 times. She tried and failed with reasonably-sized sheets of paper.

So she used something incredibly thin - gold foil and she succeeded in folding her gold foil in half 12 times. But her maths teacher said that ultra-thin gold foil was too easy - she had to fold paper 12 times. She studied the problem, and came with two mathematical solutions.

The first solution was for folding the paper in alternate directions. She derived a formula relating the number of folds possible (n) to the width (W, of the square sheet you start with) and the material's thickness (t):

The second solution was for folding the paper in a single direction. This is the case when you try to fold a long narrow sheet of paper. She derived another formula relating the number of folds possible in one direction (n) to the minimum possible length of material (l) and the material's thickness (t):

She derived from her formula that to successfully fold paper 12 times, she would need about 1.2 km of paper. After some searching she found a roll of special toilet paper that would suit her needs. She rolled out the jumbo toilet paper, marked the halfway point, and folded again and again. After seven hours, she folded her paper for the 11th time into a slab, about 80 cm wide and 40 cm high (in the photo above). She then folded it another time to get that 12th fold !!!!

Incredible isn't it ??

Vinayhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06056727608733646410noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-18945075.post-71984167394689214192007-01-07T22:23:00.000+05:302007-01-08T15:33:12.362+05:30DweepaDuring the days of my engineering course, a film by name - Dweepa directed by Girish Kasaravalli, made news. Actress late Soundarya had produced it. It was shot in the Malenadu region of Karnataka with lush green forests, large bodies of water as its back drop. I had also read that the rainy scenes were shot in the natural rain. Dweepa also won the Swarna Kamala (Best Film). I wanted to watch the film since then. Finally I watched it on Doordarshan in its Award films programme late night around one month back.

The film is very good, it deals with the condition of people who are set to loose their houses in the backwaters of a dam being constructed. The film also draws lots of parallels betwen the Nature and human relationships.

**Spoiler warning**
There are mainly four characters in the film. Nagi played by Soundarya. Nagi's husband is Ganapaiah played by Avinash. Nagi's relative Krishna played by Harish Raj and finally Nagi's Father-in-law. Nagi's family lives in a place on the banks of a river.

There livelihood gets threatened by a new dam being constructed down stream, making their place coming under the backwater of the dam. All the villagers are being compensated to relocate to a safe place. But Nagi's Father-in-law does not agree to shift to a new place whatsoever. Krishna who used to be in Bombay comes to stay with them.

Because of Krishna, there is some trouble in the relationship between Nagi and her husband. Krishna leaves the place taking away the only boat Nagi has. Now Nagi and her husband become locked in the village which has become an Island in the backwaters. With the thundershowers continuing, there is always a danger of water entering the house. But Nagi shows great spirit and determination by staying awake whole night to protect herself, her husband, the cattle from the water. The film continues...

Though Dweepa is one film, but it has lots of stories interwoven inside it. The condition of people being displaced by dams, the relationships between man and wife troubled by a third person, making each one them to live like an Dweepa (island), and in the end, we can see hope personified as Nagi. The major part of the film deals with the parallels between the events occuring around them in Nature and the human minds becoming islands.

But I liked the last part of the film where Nagi never gives up hope, does what ever she can do to overcome the situation unlike her husband who just hopes but does not do anything in that regard. Nagi shows that with hope, determination to achieve the task and working towards that, one can overcome any challenge.

The film leaves with many questions, for which the viewer has to find the answer.Vinayhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06056727608733646410noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-18945075.post-41899291776496791612007-01-07T21:03:00.000+05:302007-01-08T12:37:33.081+05:30Sawaal-JawaabAround 15 years back, few houses had a Cable TV connection. Even the Cable TV channels were very few. So most of the people used to tune into Doordarshan. Doordarshan used to broadcast a number of very good programmes. And some programmes had a long lasting relationship with the viewers. They enjoyed huge viewer base, high TRPs which no present TV programmes can even dream of. They created a niche around them.

One of my favourites among them are Surabhi, Malgudi Days, Vyomkesh Bakshi. These programmes were very different from one another. One of them was a Cultural Magazine, one based on RK Narayan's collection of stories and one India's Sherlock Holmes.

Surabhi has been highly successful, running for over a decade. It used to be fresh in every episode. It was a collection of small documentaries on India's Culture, Dance, Music, Forests, Wildlife, Cinema, Cuisine ...... Two charming people used to anchor the show, the majestic Siddharth Kak and the charming Renuka Shahane, with her 10kW smile. They had a good chemistry between them. The anchors were also highly responsible for the success of Surabhi. I think in between the anchors got changed and the TRPs went down, later Siddharth and Renuka came back to anchor the show.

People of India were shown the treasures of India, which were unknown to most of us. Surabhi had stories from North to South, East to West, from even Lakshadweep and Andaman Nicobars, where they even met the native people who are still away from the modern world. In the later part, they also showed the very unknown Uzbekistan, Turkmenistan, Kenya, Turkey... They were not the usual Travel Documentaries, where they will show the Hotels, Lodges... The documentaries used to concentrate of the Life, Culture, Cuisine of those places.

Surabhi was connected to the people with its Sawaal-Jawaab, the question and answer section, which was a new concept then when there were no mobile phones, no SMSs. People answered the questions with 15p post card, which was later replaced by a competition post card. I used to answer with atleast four cards, each one carrying the names of the four family members. Later, with the competition post cards, it got reduced to one or two. But I did not win in any of the lucky draws. But still there was a hope every time with the next Sawaal-Jawaab.

Later Surabhi started a section called 'Gyan-Vigyan', where people could ask answers for their questions in science which will be answered by Prof. Yash Pal and win prizes. This seemed to be a silver lining for me, who has been unlucky, to win by writing answers. I had sent a question, which was infact suggested to me by my sister. The question was 'When we feel sleepy, why do we yawn?'. In Gyan-Vigyan section of one of the episodes, the question was read out by the anchor to Professor. I was so sure of my unluck that I thought some one else has also sent the same question I sent. When they later turned the post card, I saw my name and I became so excited that I even forgot to listen to the answer. I was Jumping around with joy. They sent four books of the Cultural Magazine - Marg. I have only seen the huge pictures in those books multiple times, though havent read any of them yet.

All those days are gone only to remember and cherish. Though Surabhi TV did not continue on TV, it gave rise to a movement with the name - India Surabhi. I still wish Surabhi comes back on TV, with the same team of Siddharth Kak, Renuka Shahane and others.

Some of the episodes can be watched at Amul.tvVinayhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06056727608733646410noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-18945075.post-28114839886780492912006-12-20T21:18:00.000+05:302006-12-20T23:21:05.469+05:30Specchio per i raggi del sole ?Wondering what title is this ?? The daily activities are guided by Sun. Just think of the thick cloudy rainy day, everyone will be lazy the entire day. When people of the the extreme Northern hemisphere are so desperate for the Sun rays, then we in India where Sun rays are available on almost 365 days of the year, are we harnassing the solar energy to the extent we can ? There is some awareness about Solar Water heaters, thanks to Sky rocketing Electricity bills !!

How long can India depend upon Petroleum, Natural Gas, Coal or even Nuclear Energy to produce electricity ? With the abnormal monsoons which are going to be common in the future, Hydro-electricity is non-dependable. India will be hit by a major Energy Crisis in the coming years. With the world Oil resources depleting day by day and soon to get extinct, developing countries like India will be the victim of high Oil prices in the World Oil Market. Petrol and Diesel will become too costly for the Indians to run their Motor Vehicles. The only answer for this is to use Electric Motor Vehicles. The only solution for Energy hungry India as well as China is The SUN, which is the ultimate source of Energy for the whole Solar System. I just love geography. Geography is a study of our Mother Earth. Wikipedia has this definition - Geography (from the Greek words Ge or Gaea, both meaning "Earth", and graphein meaning "to describe" or "to write"or "to map") is the study of the Earth's features and of the distribution of life on the earth, including human life and the effects of human activity. So, literally, the translation would be "To describe Earth".

Studying Geography always includes Atlas, Maps, Pictures of various places on Earth. It does not need much memorising unlike History or Civics, since memorising something related to a Picture is extremely easier. I am always fascinated by Maps. Probably this might be the reason why I love Geography more than other subjects. Studying Atlas has been my favourite pass time since my school days.

Now a days, many online tools bring Geography much closer to people. Google Earth, Google maps, Microsoft Virtual Earth are some of those. Among them Google Earth is my new Fascination. Google has done a commendable job putting huge database of satellite pictures, information about various places into one place and making them more interative. International Organizations are using Google Earth to analyze the state of Global Warming. Latest information on Google Earth can be found here.

Google and National Geographic are celebrating "Geography Awareness Week". Google has added more layers in Google Earth as part of that. One of them is David Rumsey Historical Map Collection. This Collection has Maps since 15th Century. These are the pictures of the of the world in 1690. The names are in Italian.

Now Amazzoni and Brasille have become Brazil. Paraguai has become Uruguay, Paraguay, Argentina. Chile has become more elongated. Peru has got divided into Bolivia, Peru and Columbia. Gujana has become Venezuala. United Mexico, Luiciana, California can be seen in North America.

Our Asia. Indie was so big !!! Indie has become India, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Myanmar, Thailand, Malaysia, Singapore, Cambodia, Vietnam, Laos, Srilanka... One can see Maratha, Madras, Bombay, Surat, Delhi, Bijapur, Cochin, Aurangabad.... Now I am remembering the history lessons of British India.

Now the Continent which colonised the entire world in the past centuries. Germania has become Germany, Switzerland, Austria, Belgium, The Netherlands. Greece, Turkey, Armenia all are united in the Map. Finland and Sweden are also united.

Geography always brings us close to our Earth and Nature. We can study the relation between the living beings and the Nature. The Mountains, Rivers, Valleys, Deserts, Grasslands, Evergreen Forests, Oceans makes one think how the earth has evolved from Millions of years and its importance.

Now a days, Human beings are caring very little about the Nature resulting in Imbalance in Nature, Global Warming leading to abnormal rainfalls, cyclones, Droughts. The study of Geography is much more important now than before to understand the delicate relationship between the Nature and Living beings, especially in developing countries like India and China, which are just aiming to increase their GDP by destroying their Natural Resources. Human beings have to always remember that Human force is nothing compared to that of the Mother Nature.

Save Earth

Vinayhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06056727608733646410noreply@blogger.com1
