Specchio per i raggi del sole ?

Wondering what title is this ?? The title is in Italian for the phrase - Mirror for the Sun rays ?

Viganella is a small place with a population of ~200 in Northwestern Italy near the border with Switzerland on the Alps Mountains. Viganella is situated between 2 mountains. The incidence of Sun's rays goes on decreasing from 90 degrees as we move from Equator, as a result Viganella would never get Sun's rays in Winter from around 11th November to 2nd February. Viganella residents used to describe Viganella in Winter as Siberia.

The Sun's rays are available just a few hundred metres up the adjacent mountain. The people were desperate to get the Sun's rays in the Winter. The Mayor of Viganella consulted various architects to solve this problem and finally came up with an idea of Computer controlled Giant Mirror few hundred metres up the adjacent hill to reflect the Sun rays to Viganella. Brilliant idea right ?

The Giant mirror cost them 100,000 euros. The people of Viganella put together some and rest was arranged with the help of the Banks. Today Viganella gets Sun rays for sometime everyday in Winter. Read more

This reminds me how Sun is closely associated with everyone's life. The daily activities are guided by Sun. Just think of the thick cloudy rainy day, everyone will be lazy the entire day. When people of the the extreme Northern hemisphere are so desperate for the Sun rays, then we in India where Sun rays are available on almost 365 days of the year, are we harnassing the solar energy to the extent we can ? There is some awareness about Solar Water heaters, thanks to Sky rocketing Electricity bills !!

How long can India depend upon Petroleum, Natural Gas, Coal or even Nuclear Energy to produce electricity ? With the abnormal monsoons which are going to be common in the future, Hydro-electricity is non-dependable. India will be hit by a major Energy Crisis in the coming years. With the world Oil resources depleting day by day and soon to get extinct, developing countries like India will be the victim of high Oil prices in the World Oil Market. Petrol and Diesel will become too costly for the Indians to run their Motor Vehicles. The only answer for this is to use Electric Motor Vehicles. The only solution for Energy hungry India as well as China is The SUN, which is the ultimate source of Energy for the whole Solar System. India must take a big initiative to harness Solar Energy to the maximum possible extent.
